The Ditch
The Ditch
Brand Identity, Website Design, Database Development and Local Information Platform
The Brief
The Ditch needed to be more than a simple local blog. The aim was to create a recognisable independent platform for Redditch and Worcestershire, with a strong local identity and a website capable of handling regular news, events, business listings and useful public information.
The project required a complete visual and technical foundation, including logo design, website design, database structure, content areas, live information feeds and a searchable business directory. The site needed to feel local, practical and easy to use, while still looking professional enough to grow into a trusted community platform.
The Solution
I created the full brand identity for The Ditch, including the logo and visual direction. The design was kept direct, bold and locally focused, giving the platform a clear identity without making it feel corporate or overdesigned.
The website was designed and built around the way local readers actually use information. Rather than creating a standard news site, I developed a wider local hub that brings together news, traffic, travel, weather, events and business information in one place.
A custom database structure was developed to support different types of content across the site. This included local news stories, event listings, business directory entries and key local information sections. The business directory was made searchable, allowing users to browse local businesses, services, venues and organisations more easily.
I also integrated traffic and news feeds into the site, helping to keep key sections current and useful. This allows The Ditch to provide live and regularly updated information alongside manually written local content.
The events section was designed to promote local activities, public meetings, live music, markets, community events and other listings in a clear and accessible format. This gives the site a practical role in supporting local awareness, not just publishing articles.
The Results
The finished project is a complete independent local media platform with its own identity, website, database and content structure. The Ditch now has the foundations of a modern local publication, combining editorial content with useful community information.
The site provides readers with local news, national updates, traffic and travel information, events and searchable business listings, all within one branded platform.
For local businesses and organisations, The Ditch offers a clear route to visibility through the directory and event listings. For readers, it provides a practical and accessible place to find out what is happening locally.
The project delivered a full digital ecosystem rather than a single website. It created a scalable local platform that can continue to grow with new content, new listings and further community features.
