Ticket Design for Night in the City
This project involved the design of a complete ticket system for a fictional theatre production, Night in the City, staged at The Bronze Keep Theatre. The objective was to elevate a standard admission ticket into a strong brand artefact that feels deliberate, confident, and appropriate for a contemporary theatre environment.
The design balances atmosphere with functionality, ensuring the ticket works seamlessly for front of house operations while also serving as a visually engaging keepsake for the audience.
Design Approach and Concept
As designers, we approached the ticket as an extension of the production’s visual identity. The concept draws heavily on urban night-time imagery, using a cityscape backdrop to reflect the setting and tone of the play. A warm gold overlay was applied to unify the imagery, introduce theatrical warmth, and maintain strong contrast for legibility.
The layout was carefully structured to guide the reader through key information in a clear, logical order. The production title is given strong visual dominance, supported by director credit, date, time, and venue details. Secondary information is deliberately separated to avoid visual clutter.
Key Features of the Ticket Design
• Clear typographic hierarchy prioritising event name, date, and performance time
• Strong contrast between background imagery and typography for low-light readability
• Dual-sided ticket layout separating audience information from administrative content
• Prominent admission number for validation and control
• Integrated seat, row, and performance details for front of house efficiency
• Vertical and horizontal typography to add visual interest while maintaining clarity
• Dedicated terms and conditions section for venue use
• Print-ready format suitable for trimming, perforation, and batch production
The reverse side of the ticket was designed with operational use in mind, clearly presenting terms and conditions without detracting from the overall aesthetic.
Designer Responsibilities
For this project, we were responsible for:
• Concept development and visual direction
• Extending the production identity into a functional ticket format
• Layout design and information hierarchy
• Typography selection and alignment
• Colour treatment and contrast management
• Image integration and overlay treatment
• Preparing artwork suitable for professional print production
Outcome
The finished ticket design successfully transforms a functional item into a considered part of the theatre experience. It reinforces the tone of the production while remaining practical, readable, and robust in real-world use.
This project demonstrates our ability to design print materials that balance visual storytelling with operational requirements, delivering work that is both expressive and fit for purpose.
