Album Cover Design
This project involved the design of an album cover for recording artist Vale, created for both physical CD packaging and digital distribution platforms. The objective was to produce a visually emotive cover that reflects the introspective tone of the single while remaining versatile across multiple formats and resolutions.
The artwork was designed to feel personal, atmospheric, and understated, allowing the imagery and typography to communicate emotion without relying on overt visual complexity.
Design Concept and Visual Direction
As designers, we developed the cover around the theme of memory and emotional permanence. A blurred, monochrome city street scene was selected to evoke movement, distance, and anonymity, reinforcing the lyrical sense of someone lingering in the background of everyday life.
The motion blur creates a feeling of passing time, while the central silhouetted figure provides a quiet focal point. The restrained black and white palette was chosen to remove distraction and heighten emotional impact, ensuring the cover remains timeless rather than trend driven.
Typography was kept deliberately bold and minimal. The track title is set large and confidently, allowing the words to carry weight and remain legible at small digital sizes, while the artist name is treated more subtly to preserve the reflective tone.
Key Features of the Cover Design
• Strong emotional concept rooted in movement, memory, and absence
• High contrast monochrome palette for timeless appeal and print reliability
• Bold, clean typography optimised for digital thumbnails and streaming platforms
• Clear hierarchy between track title, artist name, and label branding
• Balanced composition that works in square digital formats and physical CD layouts
• Subtle texture treatment to add depth without compromising clarity
• Print ready artwork suitable for CD covers, inserts, and promotional materials
The design was carefully tested to ensure clarity and impact across streaming services, social media, and physical production.
Designer Responsibilities
For this project, we were responsible for:
• Visual concept development and art direction
• Image selection and photographic treatment
• Typography selection, sizing, and hierarchy
• Layout design for square digital and physical formats
• Contrast and legibility optimisation across sizes
• Preparing final artwork for print and digital delivery
Outcome
The final cover delivers a confident and emotionally resonant visual identity for the single, supporting the artist’s narrative while remaining versatile across platforms. It demonstrates a considered approach to music branding, where design supports the emotional intent of the work rather than competing with it.
This project highlights our ability to create album artwork that is visually striking, emotionally grounded, and technically prepared for both physical and digital release.
